Eifco E-skive Power Skiving Machines
Power skiving cuts internal and external gears and splines with a continuous generating motion, several times faster than shaping and without the through-hole a broach needs. The Eifco E-skive 250/320 handles workpieces to 320 mm (12.6 in) and module 4; the E-skive 500 handles 500 mm (19.7 in) and module 6. Both are 6-axis CNC machines with HSK cutter spindles, precision roller linear guides and an electronic gearbox. CTI-USA is the North American distributor and service contact for Eifco and supplies the CTI power skiving cutters that the machines run.
Where power skiving fits
Power skiving generates the tooth by rolling a gear-shaped cutter against the blank at a crossed-axis angle while both rotate in time, so material is removed continuously rather than stroke by stroke. Compared with shaping, cycle times for internal gears and splines drop sharply. Compared with broaching, there is no dedicated broach per part and no through-hole requirement, so blind and stepped internal gears are within reach. It calls for a rigid machine, accurate spindle synchronization and a purpose-designed cutter, which is why machine and tool should come from the same conversation. See our guide to hobbing, shaping and broaching for where each process fits.

Cutters for the machine
Power skiving cutters are designed for the part, the machine's crossed-axis angle and the cutter spindle interface. Capital Tool Industries manufactures power skiving cutters alongside its hobs and shaper cutters, in powder-metallurgy high-speed steels with coatings matched to the workpiece. CTI-USA specifies the cutters from your prints and delivers them with the machine.

Frequently asked questions
What is power skiving?
A continuous generating process in which a gear-shaped cutter and the workpiece rotate in time at a crossed-axis angle, so the cutter slices along the tooth space. It cuts internal and external gears and splines much faster than shaping and without a dedicated broach.
What parts suit power skiving?
Internal gears and splines in volume, blind or stepped internal gears a broach cannot reach, and external gears close to shoulders. Workpieces up to 320 mm and module 4 on the E-skive 250/320, or 500 mm and module 6 on the E-skive 500.
Who makes the cutters?
Capital Tool Industries manufactures power skiving cutters in PM-HSS with matched coatings. CTI-USA specifies them from your prints and supplies them with the machine.
Who supports the machine in North America?
CTI-USA in Hudson, Ohio: application review, quotation, installation and training coordination, spare parts and escalation to Eifco engineering. Call 330-962-8160.
