Gear Milling Cutters

CTI gear milling cutters cut one tooth space at a time on a milling machine and are the practical answer for large modules, small quantities, prototypes and gears that cannot be hobbed or shaped. We supply involute gear cutters from module 0.1 to 55 (single cutters or sets of 8), stepped-up roughing cutters, form milling cutters, rack milling cutters, and spline and thread milling cutters, in M2, M35, ASP 2030, ASP 2052, ASP 2060, S290 and S390 high-speed steels (conventional and powder-metallurgy) with TiN, TiCN, TiAlN, AlCrN (Alcrona) and Altensa PVD coatings.

Cutter types

Form milling cutters

Involute gear cutters

Single cutters from module 0.1 to 55 (inch pitches 120 DP to 0.5 DP) for a specific number of teeth, or in sets of 8 covering the full tooth-count range for a given module. When ordering a single cutter, specify the cutter number or the number of teeth to be cut.

Stepped-up roughing cutters

Alternating plain and serrated form for fast roughing of large gears before finishing.

Form milling cutters

Form-relieved cutters for any tooth form, standard or non-standard, based on the customer's specification.

Rack milling cutters

Rack milling cutter

Module 0.5 to 6.0, cutting length to 300 mm, in CTI accuracy grades AAA, AA and A (AAA is tighter than DIN class AA). Supplied with up to 15° spiral gash and optional chip breakers for better finish and chip clearance. Custom-made to your requirements, including profile and lead crowning in convex or concave forms. Also rack-type cutters for MAAG, Sunderland and other gear planing machines, double-helical to 1 DP (module 25.4).

Spline and thread milling cutters

Spline milling cutters for straight and involute splines, with or without lugs, and thread milling cutters.

Sprocket cutters

For roller-chain sprocket teeth to BS, ANSI (ASA) and DIN standards.

Other CTI tools, quoted on request

Power skiving cutters for Eifco E-skive and other skiving machines, gear shaving cutters (module 0.8–8, 30–3 DP, 170–260 mm), master gears, bevel gear blades for Gleason, Oerlikon, Klingelnberg and WMW systems, and rack-type cutters for MAAG and Sunderland machines. Send the print and we will quote.

Applications

  • Automotive and truck steering: rack milling for steering racks.
  • Heavy machinery and mining: large-module gears cut on milling machines.
  • Prototype and repair work: one-off gears where a dedicated hob is not justified.
  • Robotics and motion control: small-module precision gears.

Why buy CTI tooling through CTI-USA

  • Single cutters or full sets. One cutter for a specific tooth count or a set of eight covering every count for the module, in standard or custom forms.
  • One manufacturer, every gear cutting tool. Hobs, shaper cutters, power skiving cutters, broaches and milling cutters from Capital Tool Industries, a single ISO 9001 source in Patiala, India, so profiles and tolerances are consistent across your process.
  • Materials and coatings that fit the job. M2, M35, ASP 2030, ASP 2052, ASP 2060, S290 and S390 high-speed steels (conventional and powder-metallurgy); TiN, TiCN, TiAlN, AlCrN (Alcrona) and Altensa PVD coatings. Our engineers recommend the combination for your workpiece, hardness and volume. Properly specified coatings typically extend tool life 3–8× compared with uncoated tools.
  • Inspection you can read. Each tool is measured on Klingelnberg equipment and ships with its report.
  • US-based support. Prints, technical questions and quotes are handled from Hudson, Ohio (Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm Eastern); we reply within one business day. Typical lead time is 6–8 weeks.
  • Resharpening and recoating. We arrange resharpening and recoating of hobs, shaper cutters and broaches of any make, so you get the full regrind life out of every one.

Email a part drawing or tool drawing to sales@cti-usa.co or use the request-a-quote form (PDF, DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES or an image, up to 8 MB through the request form; larger files by email (ask for a transfer link over 20 MB)). Tell us the module or DP and pressure angle, number of teeth (or set of 8), tooth form, material, and quantity, and we will recommend a tool steel and coating with the quote. We reply within one business day; typical lead time is 6–8 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

When should I mill a gear instead of hobbing it?

Milling makes sense for large modules, very small quantities, prototypes, repairs, and gears whose geometry prevents hobbing or shaping. For production volumes of standard gears, hobbing is usually faster.

What is a set of 8 involute cutters?

Eight cutters that together cover every tooth count from 12 teeth to a rack for one module and pressure angle. Each cutter number is correct for a range of tooth counts.

What size rack milling cutters do you make?

Module 0.5 to 6.0, up to 300 mm long, in accuracy class AAA, AA or A, with up to 15° spiral gash and optional chip breakers.

Can you make a form cutter from my drawing?

Yes. Send the tooth form or the part print and we will design and quote the cutter.
